Loading bays, yard depth and turning radius are the geometry of throughput. Get them wrong and a well-built warehouse becomes slow, congested and expensive to run.

The productivity of a warehouse is decided at its edges as much as inside it. Loading bays, the depth of the yard in front of them and the turning geometry available to trucks together determine how quickly vehicles can dock, load and leave. When these dimensions are wrong, a well-built shed becomes a bottleneck no internal efficiency can fix.

Dock provision

The number and type of loading docks should reflect the intended throughput, not a generic ratio. Too few docks create queuing and idle vehicles; the right provision keeps the operation flowing. Dock type — level access, dock levellers, and the height relationship to the trailer bed — also has to suit the vehicles and goods being handled.

Yard depth and turning radius

  • 01Yard depth must allow the largest vehicle to reverse squarely onto a dock
  • 02Turning radius has to accommodate articulated trucks without shunting
  • 03Swept-path clearance should be checked against the real design vehicle
  • 04Adequate space reduces manoeuvring time and the risk of damage

Geometry you cannot retrofit

Yard depth and turning space are set by the plot layout and are very difficult to add later. Getting the geometry right at design stage is far cheaper than living with a yard that fights the operation for the building's whole life.

Design around the vehicle

The reliable way to get these dimensions right is to design around the specific vehicles the facility will serve and to verify the layout with swept-path analysis. When the geometry genuinely suits the trucks, docking is quick and safe; when it does not, every delivery pays a small tax in time and risk.

Throughput is won or lost in the yard, long before the pallet reaches the rack.
